DrM: With such a rich background in education and counseling, how has your journey shaped your approach at Blue Stars?

Jenn: My journey has been deeply rooted in a passion for our youth and their success. Having been a high school teacher and an undergraduate advisor at UC San Diego, I’ve gained a pragmatic, progressive, and humanistic perspective on education. I’m comfortable diving into the intricacies of course articulation, major selection, and university resources, all while maintaining an intuitive sense of where a student will thrive. Approachability is key; I’m here to support students and their families at every step, from planning to the moment they hit submit on their applications.

DrM: Your teaching background in British and World Literature seems to influence your counseling methods in a unique way. Can you expand on that?

Jennifer Turfler Blue Stars Admissions Consulting college counselor

Jenn: Certainly. Literature has the power to help students explore identity and the world around them. Through critical thinking and analysis, they connect with themes, develop empathy, and learn critical thinking, all invaluable in developing self-awareness and authenticity. This exploration is at the heart of my counseling, helping students articulate their unique characteristics and values in their essays, which can captivate admissions officers from the first line.

DrM: You mention a personalized counseling strategy. How does this translate from your teaching career to your current role?

Jenn: Personalization is about building relationships and understanding each student’s unique interests and goals. My teaching career emphasized inquiry-based and reflective learning, engaging students beyond the surface level. At Blue Stars, we adopt a similar approach, guiding students through exploration, enrichment activities, and eventually, helping them find their path and voice in their major and future careers. We challenge them to see beyond themselves and contribute meaningfully to society.

DrM: Your experience advising STEM students at UC San Diego must offer a unique perspective. How do you integrate this into guiding students towards fulfilling college and career choices?

Jennifer Turfler Blue Stars Admissions Consulting college counselor

Jenn: Advising STEM students taught me the importance of real-life experience and deep experience in one’s field of interest. I bring this perspective to Blue Stars, encouraging students to engage in meaningful independent projects, internships, and research projects. It’s essential for students to gain not just classroom knowledge but also real-world experience in STEM. Their competition will certainly be showcasing STEM related activities outside of high school.

DrM: How do you measure the success of your counseling sessions?

Jenn: Success is when students are engaged, open, and honest. The feedback I cherish most is hearing how our sessions not only prepare them for college but also equip them with time management, stress reduction, and study tools that enhance their academic and extracurricular endeavors.

By aligning a student’s passions with a detailed roadmap, we focus on cultivating not only their academic prowess but also their capacity to make meaningful contributions to society.
